Ministers: All the people of the congregation

Meet Pastor Tom…..

I was born in a small farming community in the south of Ireland, the second son in a family of three boys and one girl. Our parents raised us in church, and though it was an obligation in a Roman Catholic community to be at Mass every Sunday, I don’t ever remember it being burdensome. My youth was full of good experiences. We were not rich in worldly possessions, but we didn’t know that. No one suffered through hunger or deprivation.

At 18, I entered seminary. Six years later, I was ordained for the Diocese of Miami. Moving from a rural community to the big city of Miami was more than a bit of a culture shock for me. I served several years in a couple of different parishes in Kendall, Miami Beach, and Hialeah. Then I took a leave of Absence.

I joined the American Lutheran Church and married Barbara in 1969. In 1978, I became a pastor in the A.L.C. entering through the colloquy process. Both my education and ordination were accepted and I was installed as a pastor in Miami. We spent ten years working in a Bi-lingual setting in Hialeah, a city that was 90% Hispanic then.

We came to Georgia on Thanksgiving 1987 and have enjoyed seeing Prince of Peace grow steadily. It has moved from a family style congregation to a mid-size program church. Our challenge now is to find our identity in small groups as we work, worship and serve with the strength and vigor of a larger congregation. God has blessed us with the gifts and opportunity to proclaim the gospel of His Love and Grace to the growing community of North Fulton County. I am glad He has made us to be partners with Him and with each other in this most worthy of endeavors.

Meet Tom "the younger"...

Tom Buchanan, Prince of Peace’s Director of Education and Youth Ministries, hails from Montgomery, Alabama, where he was born and raised in a Presbyterian Christian home. After graduating from high school, he attended Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, from which he graduated Magna Cum Laude in 1989 with a degree in Anthropology. Receiving a strong sense of call to the ministry in his senior year of college, Tom pursued his ministerial training at Princeton Theological Seminary in Princeton, New Jersey and received the Master of Divinity degree in 1993.

Ordained to the Presbyterian ministry soon thereafter, Tom has served two churches in the role of Associate Pastor for Youth Ministry – in New Vernon, New Jersey and more recently in nearby Marietta. Although now a happy Lutheran and no longer Presbyterian, Tom feels that his exposure to multiple traditions only enriches his ministry, which is dedicated to the development and implementation of quality evangelism, Christian education, and youth ministries, all driven by a passion for seeing people of all ages grow in their love for Christ.
